Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
