Britain and America have agreed to a landmark trade agreement that will ensure zero levies on British medicine shipments being sold in the American market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This move ensures that tariffs on these key exports will remain at zero for a timeframe of 36 months.

This development follows previous statements to hike import taxes on patented drug products, with increases floated reaching double the cost.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and establishes much-needed fairness to American-British medicine commerce," a statement noted.

Commercial Importance

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's most significant exports to the United States, which is by far the largest market for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data reveal that in the year leading up to last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products totaling billions to the US. This value made up 17.4% of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement protects jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a worldwide center for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key NHS Changes

The pact includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it considers new therapies to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to raise total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The sum manufacturers must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement follows a ongoing dispute between the drug companies and the ministers over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by arguments that US patients were charged a premium for the same drugs than consumers in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while substantial investments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

One official acknowledged that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its resources over the past decade.
